How Do I Figure Out What My Keywords Are?
5 minute search engine keyword lesson based on 2 different types of businesses-
a service business and a seller of products, to help you determine your own
best keywords. Here's how to target your keywords and then effectively use
your keywords.
Choose your kind of business: Service business Selling

Please read our definition of keywords
before you read this page!
Service
business keywords:

Objective: You want to let people know you will wash their windows at home.
You want to be their source for this service. You want to determine the keywords
for your business.
This assumes you have already read about defining
and using keywords and the keys
to a successful web site.
If you do a keyword search "window washing", you
will find over 6,640,000 listings!
It won't help you to be # 1,242 in this list. You want to get found for your
specific service and it may seem frustrating. There is also a high level of
user frustration trying to find what they want in six million search engine
listings!
Let's find your keywords.

Web seekers have to "Refine" their search terms- and they are
doing so because of the poor results from general single word searches.
Expanding a single generic keyword word into a prime keyword phrase focuses
on the long tail search which is what they call a search with more than one
word.
You have to meet their targeted keyword search.
Keyword and web page focus:
Refine Keyword and page focus:
Further refining your keyword phrase and page focus:
Really refining your page focus:
For this business this is a great keyword/phrase that must be in
the body text of your site:
Now you can vary your top keyword because everyone does not think alike:
Both these keywords as phrases can be worked into the same page a few times.
Now create your residential window washing service page using this top keyword
information and the rules for keyword use in a page and the keys
to a successful website. Set your "Sites" on getting into the
top 10 or 20 listings for keyword ranking!
IF you are in a service business, can you follow the same
steps and apply them to find your own keywords?

The pond just got smaller and you got "bigger"
Product
Selling business keywords:
If you have only one product finding your keywords is
easier, but if you sell different kinds of products, it takes more thought!
XYZ Fish Market (example)
Objective: You want to sell fish, and it can be anywhere in the US. You want
to figure out the best keywords to use.
This assumes you have already read about defining
and using keywords and the keys
to a successful web site.
If you do a keywords search "seafood", you will
find over 28,000,000 listings
If you do a keyword search "fish", you will find
over 142,000,000 listings
You could get frustrated! There is a high level of end-user frustration trying
to find what they want in twenty-eight million or a hundred and forty two
million listings too!
It won't help you to be # 38,1421 on either list!

Web searchers have to expand their search words - and they are doing so because
of the unsatisfactory results from generic one word searches. Long tail searchers
- those who search by phrases or a word with modifers will find you. See more
on long tail searching in the service example at the top of the page.
You have to meet their targeted keyword search.
Keyword and web page focus:
Stab at:
(or you might consider buying
a position under the search term listing if you really, really want just
that, but there is already a lot of competition there too, so it may be costly.)
Refine Keyword and page focus:
Further refining your keyword phrase and page focus:
(an improvement that could work well, but you still have to have a pretty
darn good halibut fillet focused page to push against the folks already there
too or you may consider buying
a position under the search term listing)
Now you can vary the keyword because everyone does not think alike.
Continue refining your keywords and page focus:
Now create your halibut page using this information and the rules for keyword
use in a page and the keys
to a successful website. Set your "Sites" on getting into the
top keyword rankings.
IF you are in a sales business, can you follow
the same procedure and find your own keywords?
Summary and Notes
Think through more specific possibilities for your
appropriate keywords rather than broad general categories.
Be sure to include your keywords and keyword phrases as text - not art --in
the body of your page more than once, but DO NOT "STUFF" your page
with excessive use of the words or phrases. (You will very likely be penalized
for doing that!) You must read the counterpart to this page: web-definition-keywords.htm
You don't really select keywords; you develope keywords
based on your business and the content of your web pages.
Laugh with me!
I had to create some of my text in art beacuse this page
got ranked under window washing and halibut! It works!
