Simply understanding web hosting. How the world finds your website
About Web Hosting
What is web hosting?
Hosting is the service that gets your website seen by the world.
A web host is really a computer where your website pages live and are accessed
by everyone on the Internet. You usually pay a monthly hosting fee or an annual
hosting fee. You are renting space on the host computer - which is often called
the host server.
Once your website is completely done, you send - upload- your website pages
and your art and photos, to your host. Some hosts offer a system to upload
your site, and sometimes you can upload your website using Internet Explorer
as long as the host provides the specific information you need to do it. Some
web design programs have built in software to help you upload your pages to
your host.
Your web host may provide additional services, such as e-mail and stats
or reports on the activity of your website (known as web stats or web traffic).
Some web hosts may offer a very low cost by imposing their ads or ads of
their choosing on your website. Consider if this is really what you want on
your site.
Once you've arranges service with a host, and get your files to their computer
-which means upload your files, your site is launched. Don't be surprised
if it does not show up on the Internet for a few days under your business
name or the site address (your URL) , and a much longer delay under your keywords.
See our web tip #10 which explains why your site may not show up on the web
under your keywords for quite some time.
