- What is a keyword?
Dibbern definition of keywords: It's not just a single word, but can be
2 or 3 words in combination that answers the the question "what's the
point of this one web page"? (Notice I did not say "site",
nor use the plural "pages")
1. What are keywords? Can you define keywords? A word or phrase you establish
which are the right words or phrases that people would think of when
trying find your business, product, service, or place (travel-related)
2. Keywords are better when they focus on the smallest, rather than the largest
categories. To establish your own keywords properly, see our examples and
lesson on keyword
focus for your business.

- How do you use keywords?
The Dibbern's top recommendations for using keywords and guidelines for keywords
- what to do, what to avoid after you defined your keywords:
1. If you want to be listed by search engines, and be found by potential customers
under a particular keyword, you must create single web pages to match - contain-
each keyword or keyword phrase. (In some instances you can group a few similar
keywords or variations of a keyword, into one page) . This is the proper use
of keywords.
2.
Keywords must be visible on your web page as text- not art
Example : the box at the right is really art though it looks like text, and
these words "Seeing the words" as shown on the left, have absolutely
no value to search engines - these art words will not count at all towards
supporting any keywords on your page.
NEVER USE YOUR KEYWORDS IN ART.
NEVER USE A PICTURE OF YOUR KEYWORDS, NOR EMBED THEM IN A PHOTO.
THESE WILL NOT BE COUNTED AS KEYWORDS BY A SEARCH ENGINE
3. It isn't good enough to only have the visible title on your page be your
keyword(s) in text. You must support those keywords throughout the page and
repeat them until you have saturated the page with the keyword to a dilution
rate of about 2-5% of the total text. This supports your claim that this specifically
is what your page is about. Some people may refer to this as "relevancy".
DON'T go overboard with using keywords as you can be penalized in search engine
standings - and may be considered a Spam site. This isn't easy and takes some
thought.
4. If you are imaginative and come up with a hundred (or lots) of keywords
that you want to be listed under, then you will likely need a hundred (or
lots) of pages - one for each keyword! (Don't yell at me! I didn't make the
rule)
5. You could get banned from search engine listings if you try to pump in
keywords hiding text of the same color as background. This is considered keyword
stuffing or Spam.
6. You will also use your keywords in your meta
tags - more about that elsewhere and below.
7. You won't get anywhere in search engines if you try to put all your keywords
on one, or a few pages.

Keywords in the "Back room code " of each
web page
The
page you see on the Internet is the result of a bunch of code, symbols, markers,
meta tags and real words that create your page and allow the computer to show
your finished web page. For do-it-yourselfer web site developers and webmasters
using visual page making programs you may never see the code that makes your
page. The search engines really read all this stuff and determine what you
qualify for under certain listings. Search engines look at your meta
tags for good clues about your page. There is more information about behind
the scenes of a website in tip #10.

- How many keywords should I have?
For a small business, start with 10. You can grow the list of words as your
site grows. Once you see how you use keywords, you will be able to understand
why we say this. Ideally, you should eventually have a keyword or keywords
for each specific product , service or piece of specific information you have
on your site. Of course, each one of these must have their own separate page!
Implementing your keyword program information is in our success tip #10.
