A meta tag is information in the "backroom" or programming code of your web page that serves several purposes in being able to deliver your page to web viewers and get your page categorized among the billions of websites out in cyberspace.

Since this is not a technical site, I will hit the highlights.

What is a meta title?

There really isn't one. There is a title that is not actually seen on your web site pages, but is entered in the code of your web page in the area where metas are located at the top of the page. Let's call this your code title. It can be the same words as your visible title, but does not have to be.(People usually see your meta title if they save your page to favorites as it is the usually plugged in as the identity for the favorite). The Dibbern suggestion for a good meta title would be the keyword that applies to this page plus your business name. Some programs for easy-to-make web sites will have a place for you to enter your code title. It may simply ask for your title such as in page properties. Search engines scrutinize your code title. When a professional web developer speaks about your page title, they most likely are referring to this internal code title rather than the visible title on your page.

What is a meta name?

Your meta name is not actually seen on your web site, but is entered in the code of you web page. There are at least a half dozen uses for the meta name.. For the meta name keywords, it is supposed to be the focus of your web page - your keyword or very similarly related keywords - which clearly is reflected by the content of your page.. Some programs for easy-to-make web sites will have a place for you to enter your meta name or ask for your keyword(s). The meta name keywords are vital for the success of your website in search engines.

Metas in general:
In the evolution of the Internet, about 10 year ago, the system that delivers web sites to your computer or anyone else's needed more information to get it there. The Metas evolved. The advent of the Meta allowed for the movement of information and sorting out the information. Unfortunately abuses have also evolved, such as Spam and stuffing.

You do not have to use all the metas that are available for a site.
