Who is it for?

Maryland Relay is a system that helps people with a hearing or speech loss use the telephone. It works for those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, and it also is used by people cannot speak due to a speech loss.

It is also used by people who have to communicate with a handicapped person, even though they themselves have normal hearing and speech.

How does it work?

The handicapped person needs a text telephone (TTY). The person calling the handicapped individual speaks his/her message to a person called an Operator. The spoken words are relayed by the Operator (OPR) who types them, word for word, to the person on the other end of the line. Then the OPR speaks to the hearing person everything that the TTY user types back.

Either person - the person using the spoken phone or the TTY user can initiate the call. After first dialing Maryland Relay, the person starting the call gives the Maryland Relay Operator the phone number of the person or business being called. The OPR then dials that number. The Relay Operator types the standard phone user's spoken words to the person using the TTY and voices the TTY user's text.

How much does it cost?
