nursing homesWho regulates Nursing Homes in Illinois?

Who is responsible for inspections, licenses, and quality?

Its good to know this information in case you have a problem or question about your family member in a nursing home.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is responsible for the licensing and regulating of Illinois' approximately 1,200 long-term care facilities. The Public Health Department also assists the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in certification of facilities that participate in federal programs for patient care payment.

To make sure that nursing homes comply with the state Nursing Home Care Act, the Department’s Bureau of Long-term Care serves as a watch dog.

Illinois nursing homes are licensed, regulated, inspected and/or certified by several public and private agencies at the state and federal levels, including the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA).
